The burner is firing correctly and the tube is the proper grade, yet surface temperatures vary along the length or the wall thins preferentially on the flame side. The governing factors are the high thermal conductivity of the material, which enables efficient heat delivery, and the rate of surface oxidation or alkali attack, which slowly consumes the wall.

Reaction-bonded silicon carbide (RBSiC or SiSiC) contains a continuous network of SiC grains bonded by residual free silicon. Thermal conductivity is typically 30–50 W/m·K at operating temperature, substantially higher than most metallic radiant-tube alloys. This allows higher heat flux without excessive internal temperature gradients, so the outer surface can radiate effectively to the glass or combustion space. At the same time, the free silicon and the SiC surface oxidize in air or combustion products, forming a silica layer. In a glass furnace the layer is further attacked by alkali vapors, which can form low-melting silicates and accelerate local material loss. Because free silicon softens near 1410 °C, practical tube temperatures are usually limited to approximately 1350–1380 °C to retain strength. Wall thinning therefore reduces both structural margin and the uniformity of heat transfer once the remaining section becomes thin enough to create local hot spots.

In a container-glass forehearth operating with gas-fired radiant tubes at a tube surface temperature of 1280–1320 °C, two RBSiC tubes were monitored for 120 days. Average heat flux was 85 kW/m². Wall thickness measured at the mid-length flame-side position decreased by 0.9 mm from the original 8 mm. On the opposite side the loss was 0.4 mm. Surface-temperature variation along the tube length remained within 25 °C, and no sagging or cracking was observed. A parallel metallic alloy tube under the same burner duty reached a maximum continuous flux of approximately 40 kW/m² before creep concerns limited further increase; its wall loss was lower but the tube developed visible distortion. After removal, the RBSiC surface showed a thin, continuous silica scale with localized alkali-rich patches only on the flame side. Mass gain of cut samples after the campaign was 0.5 %, consistent with limited oxidation.

Tube performance is therefore maintained by operating within the temperature limit set by free silicon and by monitoring wall thickness on the hottest surface. For RBSiC radiant tube glass melting service, the controllable variables are tube surface temperature, burner stoichiometry, and exposure to alkali vapor. Reaction bonded silicon carbide radiant tube lifespan is extended when the silica scale remains protective and wall loss stays below the design margin. SiSiC radiant tube thermal conductivity glass furnace operation allows higher flux than metallic tubes, provided the temperature stays below the free-silicon softening range. When heat delivery becomes uneven or tubes thin rapidly, the confirming data are local wall-thickness measurements and surface-temperature profiles. Keeping the tube surface at or below 1320 °C and verifying uniform combustion, as demonstrated by the 0.9 mm flame-side loss and stable temperature distribution in the forehearth comparison, preserves both the heat-transfer advantage and the structural integrity of RBSiC radiant tubes.

Why RBSiC Radiant Tubes Deliver Uneven Heat or Fail Early in Glass Melting After twelve years supporting glass melting and […]

[3

post-406","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sic-knowledge
["GET
